MALIBU, CA — A swimmer appeared unaware that six great white sharks were moving through the same shallow water during a dramatic encounter captured recently by a drone off the Southern California coast.
Photographer Carlos Guana, known as "The Malibu Artist," posted the aerial footage on YouTube. Guana said the swimmer waved off lifeguards as several sharks moved nearby, including one juvenile that passed within feet of him.
From the air, Guana had a view the swimmer likely did not.
The video also includes other recent encounters Guana captured, including great whites passing surfers and boats, sharks reacting to bottlenose dolphins and juvenile sharks hunting stingrays in shallow water. In another encounter, a white shark turned and bit Guana's underwater camera.
Guana, who regularly flies a drone around the Malibu area, has previously captured other close encounters between sharks and people, including footage featuring actor Orlando Bloom.
