Today's riddle: What do evil hens lay? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Yerba Fire briefly prompts evacuation warning near Malibu — The Malibu Times (malibutimes.com) — Firefighters quickly contained the small Yerba Fire near Yerba Buena Road, lifting a brief evacuation warning for Malibu's Money Mountain 01 zone late Monday night. The blaze grew to about two acres before crews encircled it with hose lines, preventing damage to nearby homes or infrastructure and allowing all evacuation warnings to be cleared without injuries reported.
2. Jail time for Airbnb scammer — The Malibu Times (malibutimes.com subscription) — A Calabasas man has been sentenced to just over a year in prison and fined $15,000 for his role in a multimillion-dollar short-term rental scam targeting Malibu and nearby areas. Prosecutors say he and a cousin double-booked properties on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo, canceled guests with false excuses, and steered some renters into inferior or even non-existent accommodations.
3. Great White Shark Sighting Off Malibu Coast (canyon-news.com) — Shark activity off the Malibu coast has been especially noticeable this summer, with great whites filmed near Malibu Pier and even a hammerhead briefly hooked there on August 15. A local photographer and Cal State Long Beach's Shark Lab say warmer El Niño-driven waters are drawing more young sharks closer to shore, prompting new educational Shark Shacks along Southern California beaches.
4. NEWS: Sens. Schiff, Padilla, Reps. Brownley, Sherman Urge FEMA to Provide Answers on Delay to Release Millions in Federal Funding for Wildfire Emergency Preparedness Project in Los Angeles County (senate.gov) — Federal lawmakers are pressing FEMA to release nearly $4.9 million for the Encinal Canyon Road Emergency Interconnection Project, which would add a backup water main serving western Malibu. The delay has stalled construction of a crucial alternative water source for firefighting and drinking water, leaving up to 23,000 Malibu-area residents more vulnerable during wildfires and system failures.
5. Sentencing Hearing Delayed for Gangster Convicted of Gruesome LA Area Murders (mynewsla.com) — A convicted Los Angeles gang member's sentencing has been delayed, including for a killing carried out in the Malibu hills where a victim was lured and shot at a scenic overlook. Federal prosecutors say the case involves multiple brutal murders across remote LA County locations, allegedly committed to boost gang status, with sentencing now set for October 6.
