📰 News we're reading

1. Elevated Bacteria Levels Trigger Warnings at Santa Monica, Malibu Beaches (westsidecurrent.com) — Beachgoers in Malibu should avoid the water at Paradise Cove near Ramirez Creek and at Dan Blocker County Beach, where county tests found bacteria levels above state health standards. The warnings, issued amid this week's heat, also affect parts of Santa Monica, Will Rogers, Catalina, and San Pedro. Residents can check a 24-hour hotline and online map for updated beach conditions before heading out.

2. Malibu Volunteer on Patrol receives city commendation — The Malibu Times (malibutimes.com) — A longtime Volunteer on Patrol has been formally honored by the Malibu City Council for his extensive work keeping Pacific Coast Highway and local neighborhoods safer. The piece details his recent role in stopping suspected DUI drivers, his years of fire and collision response in Malibu, and his push for stronger traffic safety laws. Residents also learn how his dedication shapes the city's VOP program and how others can get involved.

3. Malibu students head back to school with strong community support — The Malibu Times (malibutimes.com) — Malibu public school students are back in class with extra academic, arts, and athletic support funded by the Malibu Education Foundation and the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. It also previews MEF's October fundraising gala for continued programs.

4. El Niño could push venomous sea snakes into Southern California waters, scientists say (newsnationnow.com) — Malibu beachgoers are being warned that warmer El Niño waters could draw rare, highly venomous yellow-bellied sea snakes and more stingrays closer to shore, on top of a recent hammerhead shark sighting from Malibu Pier. Scientists say these tropical visitors remain uncommon but urge surfers, anglers, and swimmers to report unusual animals, keep their distance, and avoid touching or moving any unfamiliar marine wildlife.

5. Heat Wave intensifies as wildfire danger rises (ourweekly.com) — Malibu-area residents are facing triple-digit heat, extreme fire danger, and the possibility of Southern California Edison cutting power to thousands of customers near Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains. The National Weather Service has issued both excessive heat and red flag warnings through Friday, with temperatures potentially topping 100 degrees even near the coast. Officials are boosting firefighting resources and urging people to use regional cooling centers if needed.
