📰 News we're reading

1. Malibu Council Expands Parking Enforcement to All City Lots (smdp.com) — Malibu's City Council is reworking a parking-enforcement ordinance so it can apply to nearly every public and private lot in the city, including the Malibu Library and local parks. The change aims to tackle issues like oversized RVs, abandoned vehicles, and late-night activity while using existing parking staff and contracts, though staff must first notify all affected lot owners.

2. Sheriff's Department, CHP update Malibu council on crime, traffic, and public safety — The Malibu Times (malibutimes.com) — Malibu residents are getting stepped-up attention from both the Sheriff's Department and CHP, with expanded drone and license plate reader use, encampment removals, and hundreds of traffic citations on PCH and local canyon roads. Councilmembers pressed officers on homelessness near Surfrider, heavy truck enforcement, canyon racing, and safety outreach for Pepperdine and Malibu High students as summer crowds continue.

3. Malibu announces local nonprofits slated to receive federal grant funds (2urbangirls.com) — Malibu has awarded $150,000 in General Fund grants for 2026–27 to a wide range of local nonprofits, from youth sports and schools to fire safety, wildlife rescue, and social services. City leaders say they prioritized Malibu-based efforts that directly benefit residents, with groups like Malibu Little League, Poison Free Malibu, and Malibu Search and Rescue among the recipients.

4. Who Is Wilbur? The Runaway West Hollywood Pig Just Got a Hollywood Ending (blogspot.com) — A runaway piglet that went viral in West Hollywood has ended up with a permanent home at songwriter Diane Warren's seven-acre animal sanctuary in Malibu. After multiple adoption offers, Warren's foundation won a shelter auction, bringing Wilbur to her Malibu property to live alongside other rescued animals. The feel-good story turns a chaotic city chase into a long-term rescue success.

5. UCLA Scientist Warns of Wet SoCal Winter as El Niño Builds (iheart.com) — A UCLA climate scientist warns that a potentially record-strong El Niño could bring a wetter winter to Southern California, increasing flood and coastal erosion risks, including along Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu. Warmer ocean waters and higher sea levels may combine with big winter waves and king tides, while agencies are already building sand berms and planning for possible urban flooding. Residents have months to prepare before the worst impacts.
