MALIBU, CA — Authorities were investigating the death of a man who was found in the water off a Malibu beach Wednesday afternoon, according to reports.
Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies responded shortly before 3:30 p.m. to the area of 24654 Malibu Road, at or near Puerco Beach, after receiving reports of a body in the water, KTLA reported.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived shortly afterward and pronounced the man dead at the scene, according to the station.
The man was naked when he was pulled from the water, according to the California Post.
Preliminary information indicated the man may have suffered a medical emergency, though that had not been confirmed, KTLA reported. The cause of death remained under investigation.
The California Post reported that homicide detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were investigating the death but that authorities had not indicated there were signs of foul play.
The man's identity was not immediately released.
The discovery came as Malibu deals with significant coastal damage from high surf and erosion. The city declared a local emergency and ordered evacuations affecting 31 properties after a large sinkhole opened along a private beachfront road in front of a home owned by actor Nicolas Cage.
