LOS ANGELES, CA — Parks across the Santa Monica Mountains could face closures beginning Thursday as officials prepare for dangerous wildfire conditions under a new coordinated closure policy.
The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for the area from Thursday morning through Friday night, with a possible extension into Saturday.
Under the new closure protocol, California State Parks, the National Park Service and two regional park agencies will coordinate decisions on closures during periods of high fire danger.
Closures could include trails, backcountry areas, visitor centers, parking lots and scheduled activities. Some roads, campgrounds and beach areas may remain open.
"The Santa Monica Mountains are one landscape, even though they are managed by several different agencies," said Jody Lyle, superintendent of Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. "A coordinated approach is important because it reduces confusion for visitors and it protects people and resources during high fire danger."
Officials will evaluate conditions daily and announce closures in advance whenever possible.
Visitors are urged to check park conditions before traveling, as not all closed areas will be marked with signs or gates. Hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and other recreational activities should be postponed in affected areas until conditions improve.
