MALIBU, CA — Malibu High School is expanding its use of project-based learning, an instructional approach designed to strengthen student engagement and academic achievement through hands-on experiences and real-world applications.

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District announced Tuesday that the approach is becoming a central focus of the school's curriculum and teacher professional development.

Project-based learning encourages students to apply classroom lessons through research, group projects and presentations while developing critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills.

One example is the school's freshman College Pitch project, which gave students an opportunity to research colleges and learn about the admissions process.

College counselor Linh Snyder worked with teachers Anthony Fuller and Casey Elmhirst to guide students through the project in their Freshman Seminar classes.

Students researched colleges of their choice, created posters highlighting their findings and presented their work to classmates. Their presentations covered different universities, admissions requirements and the college-planning process.

The project also introduced students to educational opportunities after high school while helping them develop research and public speaking skills.

"At Malibu High School, we want students to see the relevance of what they are learning and take an active role in their education," Principal Adam Almeida said in a statement.

"Project-based learning gives students opportunities to ask questions, think critically, collaborate with others, and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges," Almeida said.

The approach is also a key component of Malibu High's School Site Implementation Plan, which emphasizes academic challenges, student collaboration and greater student involvement in learning.

Teachers are receiving professional development focused on classroom discussions, collaboration across academic subjects and projects that connect instruction to practical experiences.

The school's new facilities and flexible learning spaces are also designed to support group work, small-group instruction and different classroom configurations.

School officials said the broader goal is to help students develop the academic skills and confidence needed to take greater responsibility for their education and prepare for life after high school.
