Coastal Flooding Possible As Dangerous Surf Hits Malibu

The National Weather Service warned of hazardous coastal conditions for Malibu through Tuesday.

MALIBU, CA — Dangerous rip currents, elevated surf and unusually high tides will create hazardous conditions at Malibu beaches through Tuesday, with the potential for coastal flooding and beach erosion, the National Weather Service warned Thursday.

A Beach Hazards Statement will be in effect from late Thursday night through Tuesday morning for the Malibu coast, Los Angeles County beaches and Catalina Island.

Breaking waves of 4 to 6 feet and powerful rip currents are expected throughout the warning period, increasing the risk of drowning for swimmers and surfers.

"Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea," the weather service warned. "Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore."

High tides of 7.2 to 7.6 feet are expected each morning, potentially causing seawater to collect in beach and harbor areas that do not typically experience tidal flooding.

Forecasters warned that beach erosion is also possible.

Conditions are expected to be most severe Monday, when the combination of elevated surf and high tides could prompt a Coastal Flood Advisory, according to the weather service.

The National Weather Service urged beachgoers to stay out of the water because of hazardous swimming conditions. Anyone entering the ocean should remain near staffed lifeguard towers.

People were also warned to avoid rock jetties, where powerful waves can sweep people into the ocean.
