ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION?

This is a “mainstream” Dolce and Gabbana ad from 2015 and an ad from Gucci….this looks to the discerning eye like a poorly veiled gang rape to me....one shirtless man holding down a helpless and half dressed woman while 3 other men look on admiringly. Is this the image we need in order to buy cologne? Might we be one of these lucky men if we buy Dolce and Gabbana? This is extremely poor taste. What’s next? A picture of a girl with bruises on her face and a man standing over her eating pizza?  These messages that are sent out by advertisers and accepted by pop culture are part of the reason that so many of our girls will be raped in their lifetimes….reliable studies show that number to be 1 in 4, as per the most recent and comprehensive study by the Association of American Universities. Other studies have echoed these numbers.

Why are we not outraged by these depictions of women? These companies can’t sell their products unless we condone this message…we are complicit, the way German people were complicit during the Holocaust….their brains shut off and their ability to think critically was useless…..they were numb...and we are numb.

Advertisers care nothing about society, they care nothing about women’s rights or human rights, or decency, or respect ….they are after money…..they will do anything for money….knowing, that we as a society will not hold them accountable….we will act like we always do…like sheep. We will buy the cologne and the clothes, we will download the Rap songs…and sing them out loud….

You wouldn’t accept or eat any and every type of food that was put in front of you....you would take the time to evaluate it for quality and flavor....so why accept everything that pop culture feeds your mind?

but don’t be too surprised at the numbers on rape and violence against your daughters and sisters and mothers....it’s YOUR problem, it’s YOUR responsibility.
