Celebrating the California Gray Whale
No California gray whale showed up Sunday for the annual festival in its honor, but there were plenty of other animals and things to do at the Earth Day Whale Fest.
Animals, magic, arts and crafts and environmental education were part of the festivities Sunday at for the 13th annual Earth Day Whale Fest. The State Parks’ event was created to celebrate the California gray whale, “and its successful return from the brink of extinction,” according to the event website.
No California gray whale showed up for the event, but there were plenty of other animals there, including those from the Topanga-based nonprofit The Nature of Wildworks. It is home to 45 species that came there for various reasons, and the animals are brought to events to educate the public.
The Whale Fest also included a magic show, good food, an opportunity to create Adamson House tile replicas and environmental education booths from Heal the Bay, the California Wildlife Center and others.
