City To Host Town Halls On School Separation, Short-Term Rentals
Malibu is hosting virtual town halls on a proposed independent school district, and the new short-term rental amendment.
MALIBU, CA — The Malibu City Council is hosting virtual public hearings on two hot-button topics next week: short-term rentals and school separation.
On Monday, Oct. 26 at 6:30, Malibuites will have a chance to voice their opinions on a proposed new short-term rental amendment to the Local Coastal Program and the Malibu Municipal Code. The amendment would, among other changes, limit stays to 30 days or less, require an owner to be onsite at night, require the property to be the owner's primary residence, and give the city the ability to issue revocable permits to turn a property into a short-term rental.
The meeting will be livestreamed here and here. Questions can be emailed to citycouncil@malibucity.org before the meeting.

On Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 6:30, the city will host a virtual town hall on the community's efforts to create its own school district, independent of the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District. The event will be hosted by the city's Ad Hoc Committee on School District Separation and a consultant team.
The City Council voted unanimously on Oct. 12 to reinstate a petition for a Malibu Unified School District to the Los Angeles County Office of Education Committee on School District Organization.

The city will now begin to prepare the reports necessary to advance the petition through the LACOE Committee on School District Organization (County Committee) process. If the County Committee approves, the petition will then need to be ratified by the State Department of Education.
Participants can submit questions in advance to EShavelson@MalibuCity.org and will have an opportunity to submit written questions during the Wednesday meeting. To join the meeting, visit https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85841880852, or use meeting code 858 4188 0852.
