For decades, the Malibu community has longed to govern their own public schools. On April 17, 2021, the City presented its preliminary petition to separate from the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SM-MUSD) and to create an independent Malibu Unified School District (MUSD), to the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Committee on School District Organization (County Committee).
On September 18, the County Committee will continue the public hearing on the City’s petition. Community members are encouraged to attend the virtual hearing and show their support for this effort to give Malibu families local control over local Malibu public schools.
Live Spanish translation will be provided.
You may also submit written comments or documentation in advance of the meeting by 4:00 PM on Tuesday, September 14 via email to Anna Heredia at: Heredia_Anna@lacoe.edu
Stay Informed! Community members are also encouraged to get accurate facts and straight answers - the separation process is complex. Visit the City’s webpage: https://www.malibucity.org/MUSD.
