Comments on Proposed Malibu High Project Due Today

All comments on the project will be addressed in the final environmental impact report, which is scheduled to go before the Board of Education in November.

Today is the deadline to make comments on the draft environmental impact report for the Campus Improvements Project. There is no time specified in the notice about the deadline, but it would be a good idea to submit the comments by 5 p.m.

All written comments will be addressed in the final EIR, which the Board of Education will consider for certification on Nov. 3. Also at that meeting, the board will likely vote on the approximately 77,000-square-foot project.

Comments can be submitted through email to measurebb@smmusd.org. You should include the name of the project in the email's subject line. Comments can also be submitted through fax to 310-581-6720. Go here to read the draft EIR.

The proposed project would involve the implementation of a partial redevelopment program, which would include a net total of approximately 76,694 square feet of new construction (mostly replacement, as demolition of 15,041 square feet of existing development would occur) and the renovation and/or upgrading of existing facilities and infrastructure.

The project features one new two-story building for classroom, library and administrative offices uses, outdoor space, rooftop garden and the renovation of the existing Building E. New staff and event parking would be provided in a 150-space parking lot located next to the existing athletic field.

The middle school program would be separated from the high school program by devoting Building E to the high school, while middle school classrooms would be provided in the new building. The existing library and administration buildings would be demolished.

A new student drop-off and pick-up lane would be placed along Morning View Drive in front of the new building. Minimal safety and security lighting would be provided on exterior walls of buildings, building entrances, parking lots, ramps and stairs.

The project would result in no impacts to agricultural resources, mineral resources, population and housing and public services.

It would result in less than significant impacts related to visual character and scenic resources, operational air quality, biological resources, cultural resources, geology and soils, hazards and hazardous materials, hydrology and water quality, land use, construction and operational noise, recreation and parks, construction and operational traffic and parking, utilities and service systems and greenhouse gases.

It would result in significant and unavoidable adverse impacts related to increased sky-glow and construction air quality.
