County Planning Commission Supports Pepperdine Development

The commission vote is 5-0.

The Los Angeles Regional Planning Commission voted 5-0 Wednesday morning in Downtown Los Angeles in favor of  Campus Life Project. The homeowners association from Malibu Country Estates, which is located next to the university, previously opposed the 400,000-square-foot development proposal. The two parties recently reached an agreement on measures to mitigate impacts of the project. The also voted to endorse the project last week.

The plan must go before the California Coastal Commission for final approval.

  •  Rehabilitation of student housing that would include a net increase of 468 beds
  •  An athletic/events center that would have a capacity for 5,470 spectators, which is 2,000+ more people than Firestone Fieldhouse can handle; this would allow the school to host women’s basketball and men’s volleyball NCAA tournament competitions (it would not have a large enough capacity to qualify for men’s basketball tournament games)
  •  Upgrade of the soccer field with up to 1,000 permanent seats (that total can currently only be reached when temporary seats are included) and lighting; this would allow for NCAA tournament play
  •  A “Town Square” at the existing parking lot with 203 net new parking spaces and landscaping to allow for outdoor classes and “informal student recreation”
  •  An overall net increase of nearly 900 parking spaces
