Heavy Rain Storm Expected In Malibu

Those living in Woolsey Fire burn areas should prepare for lack of water and power, traffic signals not working and road closures.

MALIBU, CA – A heavy rainstorm is expected in Malibu Wednesday as Malibu schools in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District are closed for a second day. According to the National Weather Service, all areas will receive half an inch to an inch of rain between Tuesday and Wednesday. Late Wednesday into Thursday, steady rains are expected with embedded heavier downpours.

Peak rain rates are very uncertain at this time, the National Weather Service said. A high surf advisory is in effect through Friday.

"As part of its storm preparation plan, the city continues to monitor storm conditions and crews are patrolling and clearing roads of rocks and debris, clearing storm drains and culverts to prevent flooding, placing temporarily concrete k-rails to prevent flooding and debris flows, and has pre-placed heavy equipment at areas sensitive to flooding and debris flows," the City of Malibu said. "Sheriffs Volunteers On Patrol are assisting with patrolling City streets and reporting issues."

Flooding, mud and debris flows are a "very real and dangerous threat" to communities affected by the Woolsey Fire, the city said. Residents living in those areas should plan and prepare for evacuations, lack of water, power and natural gas, traffic signals not functioning, and roads that may be closed.

"Evacuation orders should not be taken lightly and are ordered because there is a threat to life and property," the statement said. "Evacuate early to reduce traffic congestion out of Malibu."

It is possible residents may not get emergency alerts due to possible storm-related power outages. The City of Malibu urges people to monitor storm conditions on local radio, and if possible, the National Weather Service. If heavy rain persists, do not wait for evacuation orders. Leave early.
