How Bad Are California Drivers?

Turns out we're not that bad.

Like it or not, California drivers have the dubious honor of being some of the worst drivers in the nation.

After all, we’re the home the California rolling stop and considering our blasé attitude about speed limits (it’s just a suggestion, right?), it’s no wonder other states have a low opinion of our drivers.

But according to a recent poll by carinsurancecomparison.com, California drivers are somewhere in the middle, coming in at No. 22. While that’s nothing to crow about, it’s better than our ranking last year, 19th.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, California averages a little less than one death per 100 miles traveled, putting at No. 40 in traffic fatalities. But it’s our relatively low ranking in careless driving (No. 9) and traffic violations (No. 15) that saved us from being higher on the list.

So, which states have the best drivers? That’d be Minnesota, Ohio, Vermont, Iowa and Nebraska.

Among the worst drivers? That’d our neighbor, Arizona and New Mexico, No. 6 and No. 2, respectively.

Perhaps the next time you see a “Zonie” license plate the road, it’d wise to move to the next lane.
