A packed hall was in attendance at Santa Monica High School's Barnum Hall earlier this month to watch talented fifth-graders from the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District compete for the title of best ballroom dancing school. The students used the moves they learned from 10 weeks of training with the nonprofit Ballroom Madness.
The top trophy went to students from Roosevelt in Santa Monica. placed second. Franklin was third. Students from as well as Santa Monica's John Muir and Will Rogers also competed.
But the trophies were not the most important part of the show.What was important were Malibu and Santa Monica youth got to have fun and show an audience what they learned through several weeks of hard work. Also, everybody involved found a new appreciation for ballroom dancing.

Ballroom Madness is a nonprofit founded in 2008 by Jane Dorian and Daniel Ponickly, two ballroom dancers who met in Los Angeles. For more information on the organization, go here.
