Malibu Addresses Speeding On Las Flores Canyon And Rambla Pacifico

City officials are exploring ways to address speeding on two canyon roads.

MALIBU, CA — The city is exploring options to crack down on speeding on two canyon streets following residents' complaints.

The Public Safety Commission on July 12 will consider options for speeding-prevention measures on Las Flores Canyon Road and Rambla Pacifico Street.

Residents in recent years have sounded off about speeding on the steep, winding canyon streets. Of particular concern is vehicle speeds near Sycamore Canyon Elementary School.

Complicating matters is the fact that many speeders enter from outside Malibu city limits, where the California Highway Patrol has jurisdiction and the county has control over the roads, according to a city staff report.

The city last year conducted a study and found that the 85th-percentile speed on Las Flores Canyon Road is 28 mph — less than the speed required for installation of speed humps. Also complicating the installation of humps is the street's winding and steep geography.

The city Department of Public Works in April recommended installing speed limit signs and pavement markings on various locations on both streets, as well as regular traffic enforcement by deputies.

The Public Safety Commission will consider issuing a recommendation regarding those and other suggestions. The commission meets Wednesday at 5 p.m. via Zoom.
