Malibu Boosted As A 'Digital Nomad' Destination

MALIBU, CA — For decades, it's seemed like everybody wants their own piece of the Malibu dream. And the recent advent of remote work and van life has made it more possible to scores of people who would otherwise be priced out the city's 21 miles of scenic beauty.

Malibu has increasingly been billed as an ideal spot for so-called digital nomads — people whose remote work allows them to live an itinerant life, traveling from place to place either in a van or with the help of short-term rentals.

The latest plug for Malibu came recently when entrepreneur-training company Crucial Constructs published a list of the best Malibu beaches for digital nomads. El Matador State Beach tops the list.

"You don’t need to be rich to go there and also take pleasure in the elegance; there are several public beaches to hang out at and locations for everyone to sit back, relax and have a fun-filled day," the article reads.

The Outside blog last year published a "Remote Worker's Guide to Malibu," featuring a list of coffee shops with wifi and coworking spaces.

Malibu has recently been grappling with short-term rental policy in an effort to balance the need for housing for existing residents.
