Malibu Canyon Road Reopens After Fatal Canyon Rollover Monday

A man died after his car plunged off a Malibu Canyon Road cliff early Monday morning, authorities said.

MALIBU, CA — Malibu Canyon Road has reopened in both directions after being shut down for 12 hours following a fatal rollover crash that sent a driver plunging off a cliff, authorities said.

Flaggers were diverting traffic in both directions to a single lane as of noon Monday. Authorities warned motorists to expect delays.

The crash occurred at around 12:20 a.m. on Malibu Canyon Road about a mile north of Pacific Coast Highway. The car was northbound when it rolled over, struck a utility pole and went over the embankment, according to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's station.

The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

All lanes of Malibu Canyon Road were shut down as a result of the investigation. Authorities expected to reopen the road at around 9 a.m., but nearly two hours later the road had not reopened and city officials say they do not have an estimated time for when it will reopen.

The road remains closed from Mulholland Highway to Civic Center Way.
