Malibu High Water Polo Beats Oaks Christian in League Opener
The junior varsity team also wins—in convincing fashion.
The boys varsity water polo team beat league rival Oaks Christian, 3-2, on Wednesday in a tight defensive battle. The Sharks managed to win the Tri-Valley League season opener with timely goals and great defense, including strong play from goalie Dane Sartorius. He made several spectacular saves and recorded 11 blocks in the game.
The Sharks started the scoring with a goal by senior Michael Mitze, and took a 2-0 lead into halftime on a goal by junior Emmet Pierson. In the third quarter, the Lions had the lone goal to make the score 2-1. Malibu senior Theo Guillemot made it 3-1 with a goal in the fourth quarter—and the Sharks hung on for the win.
Going into the game, Malibu was ranked fourth in CIF Division Six and Oaks Christian were ranked second. The Sharks beat the Lions by the same score in the league opener last year, on their way to playing in the CIF championship game.
