Malibu Minimum Wage Increases To $15.96 Per Hour

Malibu minimum wage workers saw their first annual cost of living increase Friday, bringing their hourly wage to $15.96 per hour.

MALIBU, CA — Malibu's minimum wage workers saw their first annual cost of living increase on Friday, bringing the city's minimum wage to $15.96.

Starting January 1, 2022, the city's minimum wage will include an an annual cost of living adjustment for all minimum wage workers, and the first one took effect Friday.

This year's increase is a 6.4 percent cost of living adjustment, bringing Malibu's minimum wage from $15.00 to $15.96. It's a significant jump, but not the most significant annual jump in minimum wage in recent years. In 2017, Malibu's minimum wage jumped from $10.50 to $12, and again minimum wage raised by over $1 in 2018, according to the city of Malibu.

The increases are part of an ordinance adopted by the city in 2016, which gradually brought the city's minimum wage to $15 and prescribed Consumer Price Index increases after.

The annual cost of living increase is calculated using the US Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, according to the city of Malibu.

The next increase will occur on July 1, 2023 and every year after on July 1.

Starting on July 1, the minimum wage in Los Angeles County raised from $15 to $16.04, with unincorporated areas increasing to $15.96.
