MALIBU, CA — We're in that incredible time of year where the hillsides are still lush with greenery — and plenty of mustard plants — the weather is pleasant and the outdoor activities are beckoning.

There's plenty of things to know about this week in Malibu, from an outdoor screening of a film with a crucially important message for Malibu, to a nature walk at Legacy Park.

Here's five things going on in Malibu this week:

1. Did you know all California residents are now required to separate their food and organic waste from their other trash? Malibu has been trying to make the transition easier by hosting a series of online organics recycling workshops. The next one is Wednesday at 7 p.m. Participants will get a free kitchen caddy for their waste.

Check out more information on the city's website and take a look at Patch's past coverage for a deeper dive into food-waste issues.

2. Get your little ones out in nature with a nature walk and story time at Legacy Park, set for 10 a.m. on Thursday. It's open to children ages 1 to 5 and their caregivers, who will be led around the Legacy Park Pond by an educator and naturalist.

The city staffer will lead an exploration of the park's waterfowl and wildflowers. The walk will end with story time at the amphitheater. More information is available on the city's website.

3. The city will host a free outdoor screening of "21 Miles in Malibu" Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Malibu Bluffs Park. Produced by resident Michel Shane, the film explores safety on the Malibu stretch of Pacific Coast Highway.

It's a deeply personal issue for Shane, who lost his 13-year-old daughter, Emily, in 2010 after she was struck by a driver while she was walking along PCH.

There will be a community discussion about PCH safety prior to the screening. For more information visit the city's website.

4. Check out the work of Malibu's very own poet laureate, Ann Buxie — or read some of your own pieces — during the Caffeinated Verse Poetry Open Mic at Malibu Library, Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. More information is available on the library's website.

5. Testimony will continue this week in the trial of Anthony Rauda, who is accused of murdering Tristan Beaudette in front of his two daughters while they were camping in Malibu Creek State Park in 2018.

Rauda is also accused of trying to kill 10 other people in the park. You can read some of the harrowing testimony Beaudette's brother in law gave last week here.
