Stewart, Riggins Lead Council Race, Preliminary Election Results Show

MALIBU, CA — The polls are closed in Malibu, and voters will soon know the fate of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District's board of education, city council and a number of key county races.

The most recent results from the Los Angeles County Clerk were updated at 3:35 a.m. Wednesday morning and reflect 23.4 percent of the county's votes. The next ballots counted will be a random selection of batches for the one percent manual tally that will take place on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 10:15 a.m.

According to the County Clerk's office, voters should expect to see more updates between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11. A full timeline for the Canvass Update Schedule is available at this link. The final results won't be released until December, according to the schedule.

Malibu constituents will elect two new Malibu City Council members as Karen Farrer and Mikke Pierson have terms ending this year. Neither will run for reelection.

Early results showed Doug Stewart leading the race for Malibu City Council with 27.11 percent of the vote, followed by Marianne Riggins with 20.72 percent and Bill Sampson with 20.27 percent, based on mail-in ballots and early in-person voting.

Malibu's Measure MC had 53.09 percent "yes" votes Wednesday.

Candidates fought for four open spots on the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education.

Laurie Lieberman led with 17.29 percent of the vote, followed by Stacy Rouse with 16.23 percent. Richard Tahvildaran-Jesswein followed close behind with 16.o4 percent of the vote as of Wednesday. Alicia Mignano trailed.

Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna had a strong lead in the contentious Los Angeles County Sheriff's race, leading over incumbent Alex Villanueva. Luna had 56.78 percent of the vote Wednesday morning.

State senator Bob Hertzberg and West Hollywood City Council member Lindsey Horvath fought for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, District 3 seat.

Hertzberg led Wednesday morning with 50.78 percent of the vote. Horvath trailed with 49.22 percent, based on early returns reflecting some mail-in ballots and in-person votes. As of 8:50 a.m. Wednesday, 23.42 percent of county votes were counted.

"I am so incredibly proud of our people-powered campaign to bring much needed change and equity to Los Angeles County. As we saw in the primary, there are still a lot of votes left to be counted. We are optimistic we will prevail when the final results are certified," Horvath said. "No matter what happens, I am confident our diverse coalition of supporters will continue to fight for our shared vision ."

County voters also weighed in on a ballot measure for county authorities to be able to remove a sheriff and a cannabis business tax. Visit this link for a full list of ballot measures in LA County.

As of Oct. 24, 8,043 people were registered to vote in Malibu. 3,800 people were registered Democratic compared to 1,843 registered Republican. Some 1,831 voters were registered without party preference, according to Los Angeles County Registrar data.
