MALIBU, CA — Illegally parked vehicles have plagued Cliffside Drive near the Point Dume Nature Preserve recently and now the city has come up with a temporary fix.

City crews this month plan to install 18-inch-tall channelizers along the top of the existing timbers that outline the perimeter of the pedestrian walkway along Cliffside Drive. It's a temporary fix being launched as part of a pilot program so the city can determine the best permanent way to address the illegal parking problem, according to city officials.

People have recently been parking along Cliffside Drive, including in the pedestrian path and in the travel lanes, despite the presence of no-parking signs and a solid white fog line on the road.

City staff discussed the pilot program during a Public Works Commission meeting on April 26. Commissioners pushed for staff to explore other options that could be used in conjunction to physical barriers.

Among the ideas: An increase in parking fines, ramped up towing efforts and signs that direct people to the nearby large parking lot at Point Dume State Beach.
