Malibu's Great Spas

Here are some great spas in Malibu.

The origin of the word “spa” goes back to the 14th century, when the town of Spa, Belgium was known to the Romans as Aquae Spadnae—and was known for its healing hot springs. The word “spa” is thought to come from the Latin "spargere" meaning to scatter, sprinkle or moisten. It also could come from the Walloon (Belgian) word “espa,” meaning spring or fountain.

The traditional, ancient definition of spa is a place for balneotherapy—bathing in mineral waters. Over the centuries, the definition of spa has expanded to include these designations—made by the International Spa Association: Ayurvedic is all natural and sometimes used as alternative medicine. Club spa is a fitness facility. Cruise ship spas offer fitness, wellness and spa cuisine. Day spas offer a variety of day-use spa services. Dental spas include dental services. Destination spas are usually seven-day places. Garden spas are outdoors for bathing and cleansing. Medical spas are overseen by professionals, and feature balneotherapy with a variety of fitness and wellness. Mineral springs offer mineral, thermal or seawater hydrotherapy treatments. There are resort/hotel spas and mobile spas, where the employees come to your home or hotel room.
