A 42-year-old man rock climbing above Century Lake Dam in Malibu Creek State Park Wednesday evening fell 200 feet to his death, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s lieutenant told Patch.

The call came into rescue workers at 7:55 p.m., said Lt. Michael Williams of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station. The department’s Search and Rescue Team and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded, but there was nothing they could do.

“It appeared he was free climbing on the rocks, on the face of the rocks, and he fell,” Williams said.

He was pronounced dead on the scene and rescuers were awaiting the arrival of the coroner’s office at the time of publication.
