Mayor Accuses Malibu Of Bending Rules For The Ultra Rich And Famous

The allegations stem from an emergency special permit issued for a Kourtney Kardashian event over the weekend.

MALIBU, CA —In a lengthy social media post he dubbed "City For Sale" Malibu Mayor Bruce Silverstein accused reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian of lying on a city permit application and the city of catering to her and the ultra-rich and famous in general.

According to Silverstein, what was billed as a private baby shower for Kardashian turned out to be a large, corporate "influencer event."

“I understand that the event has been represented to be a baby shower that is being hosted by the owner of the property,” Silverstein posted to Facebook. “Both of those representations are contrary to what the event planner told me — which was that the house is being ‘rented’ for an ‘influencer event.'”

Silverstein blamed the city for letting celebrities bend the rules.

Both a city spokesman and a representative declined requests by the Los Angeles Times for comment Monday.

"City of Malibu Continues to Place Celebrities and the Uber Wealthy Over Residents: City Staff Sells Out to Kardashians and Grants Emergency Expedited Permit for Large Event in a Vacant Single-Family Home in Private Neighborhood," the mayor wrote before delving into a day spent trying to get city staff to put a stop to the event.

"On Thursday morning, I saw multiple trucks unloading hundreds of boxes, furniture, and other home décor at the house next-door to where I am living, which has been for sale for the past year. I went over the greet the new neighbors, only to learn that the house had been rented by an event planner to host an “influencer event” led by Kourtney Kardashian," he wrote. "I explained that this sort of activity was not permitted without a “Special Event Permit” and suggested that they relocate their event. I then informed the City’s Code Enforcement department that an unpermitted event was occurring in what appears to be an unlawful Short Term Rental."

To his dismay, the city staffers had issued an "emergency expedited Special Event permit... to clear the way for the Kardashian event," he wrote.

"It is incredible and entirely unacceptable that the city staff, including the Chief Code Enforcement Officer, Planning Director, Interim City Attorney, and possibly the City Manager would join together to move heaven and earth to get this accomplished on no day’s advance notice for a wealthy celebrity when our residents are required to wait days, weeks and even months for such attention respecting matters of much greater concern than a celebrity party," he wrote.

For many Malibu locals, star-studded events at homes and local businesses create noise, parking and traffic headaches.

"Not a good look for the city – although it is a great ad to non-residents who want to come here and destroy the residents' peaceful enjoyment of their homes," Silverstein concluded.
