Meet an “Amazing” With Club Music Whiz-Ability
She plays to crowds mainly in their 20s.
Sumiko Iwamuro, at 82, is better known in Tokyo clubs as “DJ Sumirock.” She plays to crowds mainly in their 20s, who thrive on her eclectic mix of beats and tunes. But Sumiko isn’t just a DJ, she also runs a Chinese restaurant by day. Sumiko took up DJ-ing in her 70s, spending a year first to learn the trade, and continues to expand her DJ skills.
What’s next for this talented lady? Debuting on the New York club scene is her dream, and at the rate she’s going, there’s every chance that Sumiko will get there. Meanwhile, her greatest joy is to watch her audience enjoying themselves.
