Helen Dugan, 81, started taking karate lessons at 47, and soon opened her own karate studio.

Helen Dugan, 81, started taking karate lessons at 47, when she realized she needed the exercise more than the two sons she’d just enrolled in karate classes. After earning her black belt, Helen opened her own karate studio in 1989--a remarkable dojo for children with special needs. Kids are encouraged to build on their strengths, without focusing on their disabilities. Her motto is: “Keep it moving!”
