Dr. Catherine Hamlin, 93, obstetrician and gynecologist, to this day works at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, Ethiopia, which she co-founded with her husband Dr. Reginald Hamlin in 1974.
Dr. Catherine was training midwives at the time, when she realized the devastating consequences on the population of obstetric fistulas. The Hospital is dedicated exclusively to providing free repair surgery to women suffering from this particularly catastrophic childbirth injury.
Dr. Catherine was recognized by the United Nations agency UNFPA for her pioneering development of techniques and procedures for the surgery. Such an inspiration – her healing hands and healing heart!
