Meet an “Amazing” Who Lives From the Higher Truth of Forgiveness and Compassion
Ben Stern, 95, a Holocaust survivor, opened his home to Lea Heitfeld, whose grandparents were active Nazi Party members.

Ben Stern, age 95, a Holocaust survivor, despite the horrors he endured in the death camps, opened his home to Lea Heitfeld, age 31, pictured with him whose grandparents were active members of the Nazi Party.
Knowing of her grandparents’ history, Lea purposefully chose a different path, and is getting her master’s degree in Jewish studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. Ben has welcomed Lea as a roommate while she finishes her degree. They share meals, stories, and many conversations about history.
To Ben, it just feels like “the right thing to do,” an act of justice--doing the opposite of what her ancestors
did. Lea is astounded that someone who has been through so much could have such a caring and forgiving heart.
