Meet an “Amazing” Who Persevered in Her Art-Dream

Nell Irvin Painter took up art at age 64.

Nell Irvin Painter, at 76, is displaying her art in galleries and selling her paintings--an astonishing adventure that began for her at 64 when she decided to go to art school.

People who take up art as seniors rarely pursue this path, yet Nell forged through the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University to a B.F.A. degree and then completed a Masters in Fine Art from Rhode Island School of Design. This, after a lifetime career as a history professor at Princeton University.

Since she is also an author (although usually of history-related books), Nell wrote about her art-school experience, the joy, surprises, and challenges of it, in her recently published book, Old in Art School.
