Meet an “Amazing” Who Ran for the Joy of the Finish Line

Ed Whitlock, 85, became the oldest person to run 26.2 miles in under four hours.

Ed Whitlock, who at 85, became the oldest person to run 26.2 miles in under four hours - 3 hours 56 minutes and 34 seconds, to be precise - had what was probably the most unusual training setting. Ed ran laps around a cemetery near his home, preferring it because he could run without the inconvenience of traffic, bicyclists or other living beings (well, mostly).

Although Ed ran as a youngster and through his college years, an injury had him stop until his 40’s, when he started running again, with his son. Only this time, nothing stopped him (other than his taking time off on purpose), and he set record after record thereafter. Ed didn’t experience a runner’s high, nor did he run for his health, he just loved the feeling of crossing that finish line.
