Meet an “Amazing” Who’s a Courageous Hero With a Big Heart
Ben Skardon, age 99, walked – for the 10th time in as many years – the full 8.5 miles of the Bataan Memorial Death March.

Ben Skardon, age 99, walked – for the 10th time in as many years – the full 8.5 miles of the Bataan Memorial Death March through the blazing hot sands of New Mexico this year. He was the oldest participant in the
March, and the only survivor of the real Bataan Death March who walked in the event.
The march honors the World War II heroes who valiantly defended the islands of Luzon, Corregidor and the harbor defense forts of the Philippines, yet were forced to surrender to Japanese troops. During the four months of fighting, Ben earned two Silver Stars and four Bronze stars. He joins the thousands of others who participate in the March to honor those of his comrades who didn’t survive the real Death March or their years of POW incarceration. His heartfelt bravery lives on!
