Meet an “Amazing” Whose Love of Outer Space Continues Ever Onward
Nichelle Nichols, 85, isn't just Lieutenant Uhura on the USS Enterprise in "Star Trek."

Nichelle Nichols, 85, isn’t just the pretty face of Lieutenant Uhura on the USS Enterprise in “Star Trek.” She is a devotee of the exploration of outer space both in the world of entertainment and in the real world. Nichelle became a volunteer with a special NASA project whose purpose was to recruit minority and female personnel for the space agency. Her impact as a role model has been noted by such worthies as Dr.Martin Luther King and Whoopi Goldberg.
In addition to her ongoing work as an actress, since the mid-1980s, Nichelle has served on the Board of Governors of the National Space Society, a nonprofit, educational space advocacy organization founded by Dr. Wernher von Braun--all this after a first career as a singer with Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton! Talent and a dedication to service in one astonishing package!
