Ernie Smith, now age 99, became at 98 the oldest active pilot in the world, according to the Guiness Book of World Records. He continues to fly solo regularly, never having had any problems with his every-2-year
medical exam and renewal flight requirements.
Ernie fell in love with flying as a farm boy, watching the planes soar high overhead, and spent every $2 he could save on 15 minute flying lessons ($8 for an hour) until he got his license in 1946. Since then, he’s flown up to Canada and all over the Midwest, piloting Cubs to Bonanzas and everything in between. He’s known to be an excellent pilot, making “textbook landings.”
Asked how long he intends to keep flying, he answered, “As long as I live!”
