Meet an Awesome “AMAZING” Who Was Instrumental to Space Exploration
Katherine G. Johnson, 98, a pioneer in space science and computing.

Katherine G. Johnson, age 98, a pioneer in space science and computing, made fundamental contributions to the United States' aeronautics and space programs as a highly regarded physicist, space scientist, and
mathematician, becoming a member of the NASA team in 1953.
But well before that, in 1938, Katherine became the first African American woman to desegregate the graduate school at West Virginia University. Her social impact and many achievements were recognized in 2015, when she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
