PHOTOS: Biology Students Get Hands on at Zuma Beach

Malibu biology students explore the beach ecosystem with Juan Cabrillo Kindergarteners.

Every spring, when the plankton is blooming and the kindergarten students are studying science, teacher Patti Mehring brings her Juan Cabrillo Elementary School students down to Zuma Beach.

At the beach, the kindergarten students team up with Malibu High School biology researchers in Bob Perry's class who are conducting their regular weekly analysis of the marine life at Zuma.

The younger students shadow the older ones, and are able to see the instruments and some of the species that are commonly found. The day provides an enriching experience for both age groups and may help young students become interested in their environment. In addition, it may cause some high school students to consider becoming educators themselves.
