MALIBU, CA — After collapsing in August, the access road into the Point Dume parking lot remains closed and under repair, according to a news release from the City of Malibu.

The Point Dume parking lot and restrooms are closed with no estimate on reopening, Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors said. The department is working on a temporary access road that is expected to be completed later in September, at which point it will work on reconstructing a permanent road, the city said.

Westward Beach Road and Birdview Avenue are still open, the city said. The city will work with California State Parks and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to patrol and ensure nearby residential areas are not overwhelmed with visitors trying to access the beach at Point Dume, especially over Labor Day weekend.

The road, which stretches from Westward Beach Road into the Point Dume parking lot, had been eroded for over a month by high tides and surf, the city said. It eventually collapsed on Aug. 21, a weekend that brought flooding and shoreline damage to coastal areas all over Southern California.
