MALIBU, CA — The southbound shoulder of Pacific Coast Highway will remain closed for several months near Ratner Beach to allow Caltrans crews to begin a project to reconstruct a damaged slope.

The barricades first went up in January between south of Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Coastline Drive and will remain there for the duration of the project, which will continue at least through the summer. The repairs are necessary after years of erosion damaged the beachfront; recent storms have pushed the erosion onto the shoulder of PCH, according to Caltrans spokesman Marc Bischoff.

The project does not involve closing any PCH travel lanes.

Caltrans will reconstruct the shoulder slope and then build rock-slope protection using boulders. The agency has requested permission to work on directly on the beach from Los Angeles County; if the request is granted, part of the beach will be blocked during construction.
