Scientists Worry World May Be Running Out of Sand: While most people assume sand is an infinite resource, a just published prospectus cautions that the over-exploitation of global supplies of sand - mostly for use as construction materials, could wreak both political and environmental havoc.
I’m not one bit surprised. I suspected sand was becoming a valuable commodity after I went to the beach a while back and a guy with a gravelly voice comes up to me and asks if he can have some of the sand between my toes. I tell him “sure pal, but what’s lodged inside my bathing suit is off limits.”
One thing’s for sure, sand is not a subject that can just be swept under the rug. I mean, I have a cat I’m responsible for. What’s to become of his litter box? I have enough things to fret about without having to worry about crap like that. Sure, friends try and reassure me, saying they doubt the world will ever be in a state where we won’t even have sand for litter boxes and to worry about it is like getting into a sand trap, but I quickly remind them that nothing is ever written in cement.
