Sharks Baseball Wins Season Opener
Alvaro "Alvie" Alvarado's seventh inning, two out, walk-off double to the wall lifts the Malibu High varsity baseball team to a 3-2 win over St. Monica.
Final inning heroics by junior Alvaro "Alvie" Alvarado at the field put the Sharks varsity baseball team in the win column against St. Monica on Friday in Malibu's season opener.
Senior Matt Gruskin pitched into the fifth inning, leaving the game tied at 2 runs apiece, the bases loaded and one out against St. Monica. Sophomore Noah Simon came in to get an inning-ending double play and went on to pitch scoreless sixth and seventh innings, setting the stage for Alvarado's heroics.
With two outs and no one on in the bottom of the seventh, senior Hunter Johnson singled and stole second base and Alvarado followed with a towering double over the head of the left fielder—securing the win for the Sharks.
