Sharks Notch Two League Victories

The Malibu High Lacrosse team defeated Oak Park and Newbury Park last week.

After falling behind early, the Malibu high boys’ varsity lacrosse team got itself on track and notched a win over Oak Park High School this past Wednesday, 9-5.

The Sharks’ early run was fueled by hustling attack play, with Patrick Wetton and Jonathan Shanley taking advantage of unsettled situations to generate assisted goals.

The second half began with Malibu up 5-3, but Oak Park tied it up early in the third quarter with two quick goals. Thereafter, Malibu ’s defense began locking down the Oak Park attack.

Senior Alec Houge, junior Will Rosenthal, and freshman Elliott Quartz played consistent defense throughout the half, and at midfield, the Sharks were once again led by Brennan Cassone at the face off X. Sean Ryan added three goals, and Gianni Rivetti, Cooper McDonnell, and Harrison Smart put in a stingy defensive performance.

Second half goals were scored by Duke Conrad, off a nice dodge off the right side, and Alec Houge smoked a bounce shot after a length of the field clear.

Malibu continued to do the job defensively towards the end of Wednesday's game, holding Oak Park scoreless in the fourth quarter.

In other league action this past week, juniors Riley Smoller and Sean Ryan led the scoring in Friday’s 9-5 win against Newbury Park, each finding the back of the net three times. The game was close throughout, with only one goal separating the teams for most of the game.

Newbury Park is known for being a physical team, which thrives on taking their opponents out of their game plan. Malibu was frustrated for most of the afternoon, committing 23 turnovers, before taking control in the fourth quarter.

Goalie Jake Wexler played another strong game between the pipes, and did a nice job clearing the ball consistently. Co-captain Chris Sol, Patrick Wetton, and Cooper McDonnell also chipped in with goals. Ryan also contributed three assists to finish with a game high six points.

The Sharks now stand at 8-2, just behind league-leading Westlake. The next game is April 18 at 7 p.m. at Agoura High.
