Steve Uhring Sworn In As Malibu Mayor

MALIBU, CA — The city has a new mayor after Councilmember Steve Uhring was nominated by his colleagues to serve a one-year term as the council's leader.

Councilmember Doug Stewart was also nominated by the council at the Sept. 25 meeting to serve as mayor pro tem, replacing Uhring in that role.

Uhring replaces outgoing mayor Bruce Silverstein. Uhring honored Silverstein with a plaque and some kind words during the leadership changeover ceremony.

"In the last year he righted our ship. Under his guidance our council meetings were professional, they have demonstrated that you can have different opinions, air them in an environment that encourages discussion and resolve them without taking each others heads off," Uhring said. "I will endeavor in my term to do exactly the same thing."

As a council-manager city, Malibu has a five-member City Council whose members are elected by voters to serve four-year terms. The mayor serves as the president of the council and that office rotates among council members in one-year terms.

Uhring was elected to the council in November 2020. He previously served on the Malibu Planning Commission and has served as a board member of the Malibu Coastal Land Conservancy, Malibu Community Action Network, Malibu Township Council and the Malibu Community Alliance.

Uhring previously worked as as an executive officer of a Fortune 500 company and has a degree in accounting, according to his city bio.
