They Whistled Past Neptune and Saturn and Mars

It's a Poem

What if aliens came to this world for a look or to find…

just what we were thinking, what was perched on our minds

They came down from the sky they came down form the stars

They whistled past Neptune and Saturn and Mars

They set out on a mission with purpose and leaning

To find a great planet that has found a great meaning.

Imagine if they could see just what we do

how we act with each other, if we speak what is true

What would they report, what would they jot down

About our green ball that keeps spinning around

But first let me tell you as a storyteller who knows, though you’ll hear it all later I’ll still foreshadow

In this world that they come from......there aren't many frowns, no one goes hungry, compassion abounds....

They’ll be adding some numbers and assembling some files

To go into their study that we might find worthwhile

After collecting that data of what’s old and what’s new

The aliens might make an announcement or two:

“In the planet we come from we all bear the load

so that others among us will never go cold.

Yet cold too often we observe on your planet

Much we see our your planet on ours we would ban it.

Some people have plenty while others despair

At the lack of the basics they need to take care

We don’t understand. We don’t see why it’s so

That the one’s who have plenty and great wares to spare

Haven’t a heart for whose bones are quite bare

Big profits are what this place is about

They’ll poison their planet to see them grow stout

It’s all like the nightmare I read in a book

About how the meaning of life was mistook

By some other planet, one far, far away

We might be there now so we’d better not stay.

It’s time to go back, to haul up the ladder.

This place is for glitter, for self centered chatter

It’s not about loving and caring for those

Who live past the very small tip of your nose.

Let’s go back to our planet, let’s waste not a second

For the feel of this new place is growing unpleasant

Some are on top others live on the bottom

Some are remembered some are forgotten

Every man for himself is the creed of this place

on the planet we live that’s a total disgrace

They seem to loves flags they love waving and waving

But flags won’t solve problems over how they’re behaving

Please try to find space in your heart for them all, the poor and the young, the weak, and the small.

Yes greed and self focus seem most appealing

But think for a moment of how others are feeling.

yes you’ve got the iphone, and missiles intercontinental

But we all here agree that you’ve botched the essentials.

Please send us a convoy of a few of your best

We’d welcome them to our planet so they could attest

To the caring and love that we have for all others

There are a few who have a bit more but we never forget we’re all brothers.

It may not be hopeless

You may still have a chance

If you change your ways faster than others we’ve glanced

See, we’ve seen a few planets like yours once before.

They’ve long stopped their spinning now they’re dust on the floor

On one last note as our engines grow hotter

You should think of every last one as your son or your daughter

Goodbye now, Goodbye, towards the stars we must go

Past all of your planets and your Sun’s fire aglow.

Happy New Year!
