‘Xanadu’ Opens Thursday at MHS

Malibu High School's Theater Department's presentation of "Xanadu, the Musical,” an outlandishly enjoyable stage spoof of the 1980 cult classic film of the same name, begins Thursday.

The musical follows the story of a Greek muse who descends from Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist to achieve the greatest creation of his life -- a roller disco! The musical-comedy is filled with memorable pop hits of the ‘70s.

Although the film, starring Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly, was widely considered a stinker, the 2007 Broadway musical by master storyteller Douglas Carter Beane, which satirized the plot of the film, was a surprise hit and went on to a successful national tour and much praise.

The show is hilarity on wheels, with the actors on roller skates on stage, and period costumes (remember headbands and short shorts on men?). It’s a moving, electrifying tale for adults, children and anyone who has ever wanted to feel inspired.
