MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Two mysterious objects that prompted a bomb squad response and precautionary evacuations in Manhattan Beach Thursday were taken away for X-ray examination and did not appear suspicious enough to warrant further investigation, police told Patch Friday.
The objects were discovered inside a garage while it was being cleaned out, according to the Manhattan Beach Police Department.
Officers responded to the 1100 block of Chestnut Avenue Thursday afternoon and evacuated a limited area as a precaution. Westbound Manhattan Beach Boulevard at Meadows Avenue was closed during the investigation.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad responded and took possession of both objects, which MBPD initially described as "potential explosive devices."
Manhattan Beach Police Officer Cole Barba told Patch Friday that no controlled detonation was required and that the items did not appear suspicious enough to warrant further investigation.
He said he did not believe there was an ongoing investigation into the discovery.
Barba said the objects were found while a garage was being cleared out. Someone cleaning the garage became concerned about the items and contacted authorities, prompting the precautionary response.
Police have not publicly identified exactly what the objects were. MBPD later reassured residents that the response posed no continuing danger.
"We can confirm there is no threat to the community," the department said in a social media post. The scene was cleared Thursday afternoon and the affected streets were reopened.
