Retired Cop Answers Door, Is Shot Point Blank

The 75-year-old man is a retired Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, according to broadcast reports.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA – An elderly man was shot and wounded Thursday when he answered the door of his Redondo Beach home and had a brief altercation with the suspect, according to police.

The shooting was reported around 12:30 a.m. in the 500 block of Avenue G, according to the Redondo Beach Police Department.

Police Lt. Shawn Freeman said the victim was shot in the abdomen and wrist and was taken to a hospital for surgery.

"Someone knocked on his door, there was an exchange of asking him who lives there," Freeman told Fox 11. "The next thing that happened, according to the victim, is he's shot through his side window."

The 75-year-old man is a retired Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, according to broadcast reports. Authorities could not immediately confirm that report.

The victim told police that the suspect was a Hispanic man about 5 feet 5 inches tall, Freeman said.

A motive for the shooting was unknown, Freeman said. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call police.
