Football Player's Killing Unsolved 9 Months After South Bay Shooting

Chyler Paton, 17 , was killed outside a pool party in June shortly after graduating from high school.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Nine months after a 17-year-old high school graduate was killed in a South Bay shooting the case remains unsolved, prompting county officials on Tuesday to extend a $20,000 reward for information about the teen's killer.

Chyler Paton was killed outside a Torrance pool party in June shortly after graduating from Culver City High School. He was set to attend California State University, Dominguez Hills, in the fall.

The former varsity football player had arrived to pick up his brother from the party and was standing next to the homeowner in the driveway when an SUV rounded the corner and someone apparently fired shots out of the vehicle. Someone at the party fired back, CBS Los Angeles reported at the time.

A "person of interest" was arrested, but "authorities case filing was not secured," according to a motion from county Supervisor Janice Hahn.

The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted to extend a $20,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or people who killed Paton.

"Torrance Police Department detectives believe there may be witnesses who may be able to provide corroborating information," the motion reads.

"I'm asking anyone who knows something about Chyler's killers to please speak up," county Supervisor Janice Hahn said in a statement following the board's approval of her motion to extend the reward, which was originally established last August. "His family have not only lived with his absence for months now, they've also been denied justice. Help us close this case."

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call Torrance police at 310-618-5570, with case number 250021528.
